Introducing CarSeat CoPilot: Eliminate the Tragedy of Pediatric Vehicular Heatstroke
If you’re a parent of an infant or toddler, you can identify with this scenario: Dad buckles his child into the carseat and heads out on a hectic day of running errands. He’s rushing around with a million things on his mind. He pulls into the grocery store parking lot, checks his shopping list, and starts replying to a text message as he gets out of the car. In his haste, he forgets to bring his child with him. The typical grocery store visit takes 41 minutes. In that time on a day when the temperature is a mild 70°F, the temperature inside the car will rise to 108°F. Every minute that ticks by increases the risk of his child suffering a deadly heatstroke.
That part about forgetting to bring the child may seem unlikely to you. You’re confident you will never leave your child sitting in a parked car. But, so were the dozens of parents who make that innocent, yet devastating, mistake every year.
According to KidsAndCars.org, 53 children have died from heatstroke after being left in a vehicle this year. Since 1999, nearly 900 children have died – an average of 39 per year.
We want to bring those numbers down to zero. That’s why we’ve created the CarSeat CoPilot Automatic Alert System, a seat belt clip sensor and alert system that ensures parents and caregivers always remember their most important priority seating in the backseat.
Proactive, not passive, reminders
The web site NoHeatStroke.org is an excellent educational resource on this issue. It offers helpful advice, such as always placing your purse, briefcase or cell phone in the back seat so you’re forced to look behind you before leaving the vehicle. Or, keep a stuffed animal in the car seat. When you put your child in the car seat, move the animal to the front seats with you to serve as a reminder.
However, these are passive reminders that are too easy to overlook when you’re in a rush. And you can’t pick up your phone and say “Siri, remind me to unbuckle my child from the car seat whenever I get out of the car.” You need a system that is proactive, reliable and immediate. That’s what CoPilot provides.
How It Works
CoPilot is two pieces of hardware: the easy-to-install sensor that attaches to the car seat, and the small key chain fob receiver and alarm. If the two become separated by more than 10 feet, the alarm sounds. The connection does not rely on Bluetooth, WiFi or a smartphone app. This ensures the product works every single time.
One important note: attaching any third-party product to a car seat will likely void its warranty. That’s why we have conducted extensive crash testing to ensure CoPilot does not interfere in any way with the car seat’s ability to protect your child in an accident. So, while you might void your warranty, you ensure your child is always safe whether you’re in or out of the vehicle.
CoPilot reflects our mission of providing innovative life-saving sensors that protect families from everyday dangers. We provide parents with comfort and peace of mind, regardless of how hectic life gets.
We will show CoPilot and Early Alert, a sound sensor that pairs with smoke alarms to ensure all family members hear the alarm, at CES 2020 during ShowStoppers, January 7th from 6-10 PM in Las Vegas. Please visit us at any time at (insert booth/meeting room number) for hands-on demonstrations.
